From the engineering vision and practicality of Daimler-Benz, the Smart™ was purposely designed and built to be, first and foremost, a safe vehicle for daily transportation. Like the gas-powered Smart, the Smart EV also features a Tridion Safety Shell derived from auto racing - the idea of a walnut or an egg-shaped, aluminum safety cage with steel reinforcements as a crash protection system. So, in the event the vehicle is impacted, it provides the highest level of driver and passenger protection, while at the same time minimizing the "danger zone" of a side impact collision. Accordingly, the design and engineering of the Smart ForTwo meets DOT standards, providing the following safety features:
- Ultra-short wheel base
helps absorb impact energy.
- Reinforced Crash Boxes
and Crumple Zone provide additional safety.
- Sandwich-type
construction with raised seat positions provides better driver visibility
and reduces "danger zone" in event of a side impact collision.
