Introducing...the First Electric Smart Car available in North America! Save money and be a leader in the environmental movement! At a cost of less than $4.00 a week to charge (less in some areas), the Smart ForTwo Electric Vehicle (available in Coupe and Cabrio models) includes a 3 year/36,000 mile drive train and 5 year/100,000 mile battery warranty.
The Smart ForTwo EV sets a new benchmark in the electric vehicle sector. Powered by a 30Kw drive train, the Smart ForTwo produces a normal highway speed of 55 to 60 MPH (most economical - up to 320 miles of range), with a crusing speed of up to 75 MPH (up to 200 miles range). These figures indicate that the Smart ForTwo EV is a vehicle that is ideal for short journeys in urban traffic. It only takes a minimum of 2 hours to "short charge" (with onboard generator) the battery from 30 to 80 percent of its capacity. An empty battery can be fully charged in no more than eight hours, for example overnight, with a standard household 120 Volt outlet source.
The electric engine, developed by Mitsubishi, is located in the rear, installed into the three engine mounts exactly where the combustion engine would be in a conventional vehicle. The transmission (variable automatic gearbox, shaft-drive) which has been locked in second gear, is likewise in the rear of the car. The Smart ForTwo EV therefore does not need the Smart ForTwo gas-powered model's gearshift knob, since it only uses one forward and one reverse gear.
The charge level indicator for the battery is where the rev counter would be in other vehicles in a central position on the instrument panel, together with the analogue clock. But that’s all that has changed. The interior and the luggage compartment are just as spacious as before, and even the Smart ForTwo EV's power storage unit – a NANO TITANATE battery - is positioned centrally in the car's underbody.
